The Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation operates resource centers at its Liberty Plaza development, 290 Arundel, St. Paul, MN and Calibre Ridge development, 151 Capitol View, Roseville, MN.  Several programs are provided through the resource, gain greater self-esteem and move forward both economically and within the community.

Volunteers needed:

1) Tutors/mentors to work with children in grades K-5:  PLUS Time programming hasConcordia University education students work with this group of children at the Liberty Plaza site and Campfire USA works with this age group at Calibre Ridge. Depending upon the site, workers can handle up to 25 -30 at one time. Sometimes up to 50 kids come to participate in academic enrichment and other related activities. TCHDC is seeking volunteers to help provide academic mentoring and tutoring, activities assistance and homework help and other support.  The program at Liberty Plaza is offered M-F 3:30-6:00 pm during the St. Paul Public Schools’ school year. The program at Calibre Ridge is offered M, T, & Th 3:60-6:00pm during the Roseville Public Schools’ school year.

2) Volunteer for youth development:  We partner with Hamline University scholars at the Liberty Plaza site and Camp Fire USA at the Calibre Ridge site in providing youth development activities:  Youth VOICE-Liberty Plaza "Teens in Action-Calibre Ridge". Youth VOICE provides services similar to PLUS Time, but for grade 5-9 group of youth.  In addition, leadership building is an important part of the programming.

Camp
Fire
provides the curriculum and the primarily teacher to work with the middle schoolers at Calibre Ridge.

3)  Summer program volunteers:  Both Liberty Plaza and Calibre Ridge open 8-week long summer programs for children and youth as extensions of the school year academic enrichment programming.  Summer programs include Friday field trips to various locations throughout the area.  Programming takes place generally 2:00-4:00pm M-Th, with Friday field trips beginning at 1:00pm.  Volunteers to go on field trips and assist with the weekly activities are appreciated.

For the safety of all, TCHDC is required to have two persons present with the children and youth for all activities.  Volunteers work with the partnership staff through all phases of the programming.

4) We offer ESL, ELL (English language instruction) and computer classes for parents and adults.  Since many of the participants are mothers, TCHDC sometimes needs to provide them with childcare in order for them to participate in the program. ESL is offered two evenings a week, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Computer classes are also offered two evenings a week. Volunteers are needed to help with the English language instruction and also to keep the children (both pre-schoolers and school-age) engaged and safe for the duration of either the ESL or Computer class.  English Language classes take place at Liberty Plaza.

5) Volunteers to teach basic computer applications: We are offering computer classes for adults and we need volunteers to teach those classes. Classes are offered at night and are usually less than 2 hours long.  Computer classes take place at Liberty Plaza and Calibre Ridge and may be arranged based upon resident interest and volunteer instructor availability.

6) Volunteers to provide free tax return assistance to our residents on an annual basis.  Persons with accounting, bookkeeping, and law etc. background would be helpful. The IRS will train and certify volunteer preparers for TCHDC.  The training will be free to the volunteers. TCHDC then offers free tax return assistance to residents one day a week from 6:00 -8:00 pm from February through April. Weekly assistance, or one-time assistance would be welcome.
