Our team - Melissa, Amy, Christina, and Dave Browne, the Program Manager- worked diligently through August and September to plan implement three new after school programs and one new employment program for teens and young adults at Liberty Plaza.

Volunteer tutor and student tackle homework assignment together.

Learn 2 Read @ LP is an individualized reading program designed to help children in grades K-3 improve their reading proficiency. Trained volunteer tutors from local universities, high schools, and the Summit-University neighborhood provide each enrolled child with individualized 30 minute tutoring sessions up to three times a week. Children and tutors have access to thousands of books as well as literacy games and other aides. As a Tutoring Partner of the St. Paul Public Schools Foundation, we have access to supports and tools that promote best tutoring practices and allow us to monitor student progress.

I LOVE STEM @ LP is a hands-on, project-based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) exploration program for children in grades K-5. After a successful pilot of the program last spring, a collaboration with St. Catherine University and its National Center for STEM Elementary Education, it is now a permanent addition to after school programs at Liberty Plaza.  Undergraduate education majors from St. Catherine facilitate curriculum-based activities designed to inspire the interest of younger children in the STEM disciplines.

Homework Helpers @ LP is an individualized drop-in homework tutoring program for people of any age (including adults) who are in school and need support with homework completion. As with reading, this is a volunteer-driven program that engages tutors from local universities, high schools, and the Summit-University neighborhood with individual students.  With homework a number one priority for parents and their children, the homework room has been busy from day one.

Tech-Powered Teens @ LP helps teens and young adults prepare for and access the 21st Century workforce.  Our Community Technology Empowerment Specialist provides digital literacy and personal skills development training as well as hands-on assistance to find, get, and keep a job.
